Samsung Washer Will Not Drain and Water Stays in the Drum

A drum full of gray water and a washer that will not empty is a stuck-cycle problem. Learn the common blockages, the owner checks, and what to avoid before service.

The cycle ends, or fails to end, and the drum is still half full of cold, soapy water. The door lock will not release, the clothes are sodden and you have somewhere to be. A washer that does not drain is one of the more common calls, and the cause usually sits in a small number of places along the path from the drum to the floor drain.

Follow the water out

Water leaves through a sequence: the tub outlet, a pump filter or trap, the drain pump, the drain hose and finally a standpipe or a sink trap. A blockage or fault in any one link stops the whole chain. That is why it helps to start at the end you can see and work backward.

Likely causes

The standpipe or house drain is backing up

If the wall standpipe is partly clogged, water cannot go in as fast as the pump sends it. You may hear gurgling, or see water rise in the standpipe. In older San Francisco buildings, shared stacks can slow down when other units run water. Try running a sink in the same area to see if it also drains slowly.

The hose is kinked or pushed too far into the pipe

A hose that is folded behind the washer or pushed deeply into the standpipe can create a seal and slow flow. Look at the hose route when the washer sits close to the wall, especially in closets.

The pump filter is clogged

Lint, coins, hair ties and small socks end up in the pump filter. On many Samsung washers there is a small access point for owners at the bottom front; the manual shows if yours has one and how to use it. If you choose to look, switch the washer off first, put towels and a shallow pan down, and expect water. If the access point is not clearly described in your manual, leave it for a technician.

The drain pump has failed

If the pump hums but moves no water, it may be jammed. If it makes no sound at all, the pump or its power may be at fault. A technician tests this safely.

A control or sensor problem

The control can misread the water level and not trigger the pump. The entry Samsung washer nd error code describes a no-drain error where water is not draining at the correct speed, or at all. The pattern with the code is helpful when you call.

What you can check safely

  1. Write down the code on the display and the stage at which the washer stopped.
  2. Check whether the drain hose is kinked, crushed behind the cabinet or pulled out of the standpipe.
  3. Look at the standpipe or sink trap for water sitting high or gurgling.
  4. Try other drains in the home to see whether the problem is shared.
  5. Pause or cancel the cycle and run a drain-and-spin option if the washer offers one.
  6. If your manual describes an owner-accessible filter, clear it as written, with the washer off and towels ready.

What not to do

Do not open the door while it holds water; the lock is a safety feature, and a flood is likely. Do not force the lock or bypass the door switch. Do not pour a drain cleaner into the drum. If you must remove water, use a bowl and towels through the owner access point only, and keep your hands out of the pump area. If water reaches an outlet or the cord, switch off at the breaker.

Differences by washer type

A top-load such as the Samsung WA40A3005AW/A4 drains through a pump below the tub, and the lid lock may prevent spinning with water still inside. A front-load like the Bespoke Samsung WF53BB8900ADUS has a filter near the bottom front, and its door will stay locked until the water level is safe. The label with the model number is usually near the door opening or inside the lid.

When to book

If the washer will not drain after hose and standpipe checks, or if the pump hums but does nothing, book a visit. We diagnose, give a written estimate and wait for your approval before we repair anything. Our Samsung washer repair page explains the visit and Samsung washers covers the lineup.

Dealing with the water already in the drum

If the clothes are stuck in water and you need them out, the safest approach is to wait for the door lock to release. Do not tip the washer or pull the drain hose off while it is full. Some models allow a drain-only or spin-only option that can clear the water once the blockage is removed. Keep towels and a shallow tray handy, and set aside the wet laundry in a basket for the dryer or a rinse after the problem is solved.

Home factors that affect draining

In a condo or an upper-floor flat, the washer drain often ties into a shared stack, and old iron pipes can narrow with scale. A washer that used to drain well and now struggles when neighbors also run water suggests the building line rather than the machine. In a house with a washer in the garage or basement, the standpipe may be lower than the pump can lift comfortably or may have an air gap that is too tight. These are details a technician measures during the visit.

Keep a note of when the problem began: after a move, after a plumber visited, or after you washed a heavy rug or a pet bed. That timeline is useful, and so is knowing whether the washer drained properly the day before.
