Samsung Washer Grinding, Rattling or Knocking During the Cycle
A loud washer is telling you where it hurts. Sort grinding from knocking from rattling, check the easy suspects, and know when the drum or pump needs a technician.
A washer that thumps like a bass drum during the spin or growls as it fills is hard to ignore, especially in a building where the laundry closet shares a wall with a bedroom. Sound is useful information. It changes with the stage of the cycle, the size of the load and the position in the drum, and those clues separate harmless causes from a part wearing out.
Start with when and what it sounds like
- Rattling or clicking early in the wash: usually something loose in the drum or caught in the pump area, like a coin, hook, underwire or a button.
- Heavy thumping on spin: a load that has bunched to one side, a washer that is not level, or a drum and suspension that are not damping properly.
- Grinding or growling that rises with the drum speed: a bearing or motor concern, often present with an empty drum too.
- Knocking when water drains: debris moving in the drain pump, or a hose banging against the cabinet.
- Squealing during startup: a belt or motor-related sound on some designs.
The easy suspects
Transit bolts left in place
If the washer is new or has just been moved into a flat, the shipping bolts or blocks that hold the drum during transport must be removed. A machine that was installed with them still in place makes a violent, regular banging and can damage itself. Check your install paperwork, and if you are unsure, have the installation inspected rather than loosening hardware at random.
Out of level or sitting on a soft floor
Many older San Francisco buildings have uneven or flexible floors, and a washer on an upper level of a Victorian conversion will transmit every wobble. A cabinet that rocks diagonally when you press the top corners is not level. The feet adjust in place, but they must also be locked so they do not creep.
Unbalanced loads
A single heavy item such as a comforter or a pair of jeans can bunch against the drum wall. The washer tries to redistribute, thumps, slows and may pause. Washing bulky items with a few towels often helps. If it happens with small mixed loads too, the suspension may be tired.
Foreign objects
Small items slip out of pockets and past the drum into the sump. Inspecting the drum and the door gasket folds for stray items is a quick outside check.
The harder causes
Suspension rods or springs that no longer damp the drum let it hit the cabinet. Worn bearings produce a grinding that is present on every cycle and often louder with a full tub. A failing drain pump, a loosened pulley or a motor issue can also create steady noise. These sit behind panels and need a technician with the right tools. Motor-related codes, such as the entry for Samsung washer 3C error code, are described as motor errors, and the sensor listing Samsung washer 8E error code covers a Mems sensor fault; if either appears with the noise, tell us exactly what you saw.
Checks you can do from the outside
- Run the washer empty on a normal cycle and listen. Does the sound happen without any clothes?
- Open the door and check the drum and gasket folds for coins, hooks and small items.
- Press down on each top corner to see whether the cabinet rocks, and check that all four feet touch the floor.
- Look at the drain hose and the supply hoses to confirm they are not touching the cabinet or each other.
- Try a smaller, balanced load and compare.
- If the washer is stacked or in a closet, check for objects leaning against the cabinet.
What not to do
Do not keep running a washer that is grinding loudly or banging hard; the damage can spread to the tub and the suspension. Never open the cabinet panels or reach into the drum area while the machine is plugged in. If you smell something hot or burning, or see smoke, switch it off at the breaker and leave it off.
When to book
Book a visit if the noise remains with an empty drum, if it is present in every cycle, if the washer walks across the floor, or if a code appears. We diagnose before repair, provide a written estimate and ask for your approval before anything is replaced. See Samsung washer repair for how a visit runs and Samsung washers for the lineup. A front-load such as Samsung WF45T6000AV/A5 and a top-load like Samsung WA45T3200AW/A4 make different noises when something is wrong, so give the model number, usually on a label near the door opening or inside the lid.
Living with the noise until the visit
If you must keep doing laundry before a technician arrives, wash smaller loads, skip the bulkiest items and choose a lower spin option if the control offers one. Put a thick anti-vibration pad under each foot only if it keeps the cabinet steady and does not let it creep. In a building with shared walls, running the washer in daytime hours keeps neighbors on side. Stop using the washer right away if the cabinet walks, if the drum scrapes, or if the noise turns metallic.
Recording a short phone video of the sound, with the washer in view, can help a technician recognize whether you are hearing the drum, the pump or loose hardware.
Finally, keep the area around the washer clear. Baskets, bottles and cleaning supplies leaning on the cabinet or resting on top can rattle against the panels and mimic a serious fault, so move them before you judge the sound.
Frequently asked questions
Usually not in itself, but ongoing banging can loosen parts and shift the machine. Stop it if it moves or sounds like metal on metal.
High drum speed exposes balance and bearing problems. A load shifted to one side or a damper that has worn will show up at that stage.
A bigger balanced load may soften a thump but will not cure a bearing. If grinding is steady, it needs inspection.
It does. Flexible floors amplify vibration, so level feet and a firm, flat surface make a visible difference in noise.
Yes. The drum, suspension and bearing logic is similar, though the combos add a drying path that technicians also check.
